“Starving Artists” cause Restaurant Crisis

“Starving Artists” cause Restaurant Crisis
Internet report blamed for shortage of waiters in major U.S. cities

There used to be this joke: What did the accountant ask the Actor? “Which Restaurant do you work in?” But these days actors are leaving the restaurant industry faster than you can say “Check Please” thanks to “No More Waiters”, a rabble-rousing ebook on the internet, being bought by actors all over the country who want more control over their lives. The ebook, written by self-proclaimed “Entreperformer” John “Bones” Rodriguez urges actors across the country to not be waiters and instead to start their own businesses.

“Most actors forget that their art [acting] is a business, and instead are working as slaves for other people- business owners don’t do that. And then the actors have no energy for their REAL business [acting] after their job.”

In the current “hiring freeze” job-market, Rodriguez’s ideas have resonated with a lot of people who recognize they aren’t going to get a full-time job anyway. “It’s better to be the one at the helm” he says.

When asked about the fact that not everyone can succeed in their own business, he commented that “actors are already in their own business, and we all pursue it knowing the failure rate. We do it because we want to, and adding another business that we want to do will open eyes to how our business can and should be run.”

Despite that so many actors are being motivated to start their own businesses, there are many who disagree with Rodriguez. His detractors say that actors are “too artsy” and lack the focus to become entrepreneurs. They also comment that actors make excellent waiters, and since most of them will never “make it”, being a waiter is an excellent profession to learn.

“Sure, being a professional waiter is great- if you choose a good restaurant” he says, “I say you learn how to have your own business, and have other people wait on you!”

Many of the income-generating ideas Rodriguez recommends are internet-based, sole-proprietorship, or multi-level marketing plans; several that he has run or is currently a part of.

“When I have commercials running, I get checks; when those commercials stop running, I don’t get checks. I have no power over them running or not. When I have a business, I get checks whether or not any of those commercials are running- I think other people want to know how to do that too.”

Perhaps the next time you eat in a restaurant, instead of leaving a tip for your waiter, maybe you should ask her for a good stock tip instead!

Are Actor’s Resumes any different from a Corporate resume?

resume actor

So many resumes come across my desk daily. Most are formatted properly, while others look like the actor did not put any effort in organizing their credits. The font should be simple. Don’t exaggerate your credits. A good casting director can tell if you were an extra in a major movie vs having a speaking role. Some experts suggest only listing your featured extra roles along with your lead and supporting roles. So you were a patron and featured, so list as “Patron (Featured Extra)”. Whether I’m recruiting for a corporation or casting a project, I look for organization, great format, neatness and truths. Some experts say that the actor’s resume is not so important. Well, I believe that they are. Most importantly, your resume, whether corporate or acting, is a well-organized listing of your accomplishments. So organize your resume accordingly.

J B Wanza wraps Film Killing Winston Jones

jbgloverHats off to my leading man, J B Wanza Jr, for his stand-in role for Danny Glover for the film Killing Winston Jones. Shot in Savannah, GA. WOW, I got to travel there too! Check them out on the set.

The stars of the film include Danny Glover, Richard Dreyfuss, Danny Masterson and Jon Heder. Moore calls the film a dark comedy, with the plot revolving around two physical education teachers trying to get their name on the gym they used to work at. The principal of that school plans to name the gym in memoriam, but neither of the teachers is dead yet.

Killing Winston Jones is produced by Albert Sandoval and Daemon Hillin and is the first full theatrical feature film for the multimedia production-distribution company RadioactiveGiant.

Go JB and good job! To check J B Wanza’s availability for your next project, call me at 213-373-1275.
